Today’s task · Jul 28, 2026

Pass your NOVA vehicle emissions inspection

Most NOVA counties (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax City, Falls Church) require a biennial emissions test for cars 1996 and newer. The Air Care station puts a smaller sticker next to your safety sticker.

Time15-20 minutes
DeadlineWithin 30 days of getting Virginia plates
  1. Find an Air Care emissions station near you. There are usually 8 to 10 in each NOVA county.
  2. It costs $28 and takes 15 to 20 minutes. They plug into your OBD-II port and read the engine codes.
  3. If you fail, you get a free re-inspection within 14 days after you fix the issue.
